Winter Fence Maintenance

On those chilly winter weekends it can be tempting to stay inside in front of the heater and watch movies. It takes effort, and undoubtedly cold hands and feet, to get out in the garden and get your chores done. However, a bit of winter maintenance goes a long way, and come spring your home and garden will thank you.

How To Maintain Your Fence

Winter can take its toll on your fence, especially if you aren’t keeping on top of your maintenance. Even the strongest of materials can suffer damage from cold conditions and other hazards we may overlook in winter. Follow these tips to ensure your fence is properly maintained during winter:

Winter Fence Maintenance

  • Don’t lean anything heavy or wet up against your fence
  • Trim back overhanging trees, shrubs and plants
  • Hose down your fence periodically especially if you live near the sea. Washing your fence will remove dirt, debris and salt which can corrode your fence
  • Rake up leaves in your garden to prevent them piling up around your fence
  • Make any necessary repairs as soon as you spot them to prevent further damage

Colorbond Fence Maintenance

The most important thing to remember about your Colorbond fence is that soil needs to be kept away from it. Soil and other debris should be kept at least 2cm below the rails to prevent rusting. Keep an eye on the base of your fence and remove soil as required to keep your Colorbond fence rust-free.

Clean Your Fence When Winter Ends

Once the winter chill starts to fade, it’s time to give your fence a good scrub so it’s looking its best for BBQ season. If you have a wooden fence, you might want to apply a new stain after cleaning away any dirt, mould and mildew. Colorbond fences can be hosed down once you’ve swept away any cobwebs!
